Pakistan observes Ashura, a momentous day of memory that falls on the 10th of Muharram every year, with most respect. Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A.) and the other Karbala martyrs are remembered on this day.
The grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A.), revealed remarkable bravery and tenacity in upholding Islamic values against harsh criticism and brutality, with the help of his devoted companions and family. In Pakistan, towns and cities will have mourning processions in observance of Ashura. To protect everyone who participates, these processions are held under strict security. In order to allow people to honor the occasion, the federal government has historically declared public holidays on the ninth and tenth of Muharram.
Tuesday, July 16, and Wednesday, July 17, are anticipated to be Muharram 9 and 10 this year. Due to the lunar nature of the Islamic calendar, Pakistan's Muharram holiday is expected to start on July 8. If confirmed, July 17 will be honored as the Day of Ashura, also known as Youm-e-Ashur.
The first day of the Islamic year coincides with Muharram's beginning. Ashura's somber celebrations honor the sacrifices made by Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A.) and his followers in the pursuit of justice and righteousness. They are a time for introspection and contemplation.
